The Australian government has successfully reduced the processing time for numerous prominent visas.
Recently, Australia Department of Home Affairs made an announcement through social media that it's enhancing and simplifying the country's visa procedures, leading to significant improvements in processing durations.
The statement from the department clarified, “Priority is being given to the current visa applications in hand. The government is taking active steps to decrease the time required for finalizing visa applications. The number of staff assigned to process applications is on the rise, and additional staff will be hired to take care of this essential task.”

These processing times are cumulative calculations for the category, meaning that multiple different subclasses are included within each category. With significant strides made in decreasing the visa backlog, resources are now mainly aimed at handling both onshore and offshore cases to minimize the number of remaining applications further.
“In the fiscal year 2022-23, the Department of Home Affairs successfully processed approximately 8.3 million visas, signifying a 190 percent growth compared to the preceding year.”
Official data has revealed a notable drop (62%) in the current applications for Australia Study Visa when matched with the same phase in 2022 - leaving around 48,800 applications still to be processed. Likewise, the temporary visa applications have also seen a decrease (73%) from over 600,000 on 30 June 2022 to slightly more than 161,000 on the same date in 2023.
India continues to rank as the second-largest source of international students applying for visas in Australia. As of May 2023, the total number of international students enrolled in Australian educational institutions stood at 608,942. Out of this total, more than 98,000 students were from India.
